About Moving Ahead

Moving Ahead – A strategic approach to increasing the participation of Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islander people in Queensland’s economy (2016-2022) (Moving Ahead) was launched in September 2016 as the Queensland Government’s whole-of-government strategy to improve economic participation outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Queenslanders.

Priority areas

Moving Ahead initially included 27 actions across five priority areas, which were informed by a broad range of consultations, including across industry and Government. These five priority areas are:

1. Build a more skilled and diverse workforce.
2. Focus on youth, and plan for future success.
3. Build our partnership with industry.
4. Increase entrepreneurship, business growth and innovation.
5. Overcome barriers and realise opportunities to completion.

As part of Moving Ahead, the Queensland Government committed to implementing three whole-of-government actions, including work to:

• improve the value of Queensland Government procurement with Indigenous businesses
• increase the proportion of First Nations peoples in the Queensland Public Sector
• build cultural capability across Queensland Government, through Cultural Capability Action Plans.

Since Moving Ahead was launched, eight of the initial 27 actions have been completed or finalised.  There are 19 remaining actions, including 16 agency-specific and three whole-of-government actions.

A new Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Economic Strategy

A new Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Economic Strategy (the Strategy) is in development to replace Moving Ahead.

The Strategy will build on the strengths of Moving Ahead, specifically the three whole-of-government actions noted above and will align with the Statement of Commitment to a Reframed Relationship between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Queenslanders and the Queensland Government. It will also celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and provide a framework to support self-determination and economic empowerment for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

The engagement period to inform the Strategy has now closed, and the Strategy is expected to be launched later in 2022.
