Inquiry into independent assessments under the NDIS

The Commonwealth Government is proposing to introduce mandatory independent assessments as a part of all National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) access and planning decisions.

The Joint Standing Committee on the NDIS is holding an inquiry into this proposal.

The Queensland Government has made a submission to the inquiry. The submission notes the Queensland Government does not support assessments being made mandatory, and shares stakeholders’ concerns about the potential impacts on people with disability.

The submission also makes a number of recommendations about how these concerns could be addressed, including putting appropriate safeguards in place, and co-designing the assessment process with the sector.

If done properly and in consultation with the sector, the introduction of independent assessments has the potential to make the NDIS less costly to access and fairer for people with disability and their families.
